Dar es Salaam. Police in the city are holding four Chinese nationals over allegations of attacking and stabbing a colleague in a business row at the weekend.
Ilala regional Police commander Lucas Mkondya told The Citizen yesterday that Mr Xiao Hai (34) was attacked on Saturday by a mob of four of his countrymen at Posta.
He explained that Mr Hai was coming from a casino with his wife Ling Chen (36) and before getting to his vehicle the accused started attacking him.
Mr Hai was rescued by patrol police who scared his attackers away and was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital.
The police chief said the attackers trailed them and when they arrived at the hospital they tried to continue with the attack but the hospital security alerted police who rushed to the scene and arrested the assailants.
“Investigations are ongoing. The case file is now in the hands of the state attorney and when it gets back to us we will take the suspects to court; for the time being, they are being held at the central police station,” he said.
Mr Hai, who sustained serious injuries, has since been referred to Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) where he is nursing his wounds.
This paper traced Mr Hai’s wife Chen who said that they know the assailants because at one point they had a close relationship with them.
According to Ms Chen, she arrived in Tanzania with her husband four months ago trying to invest in importing motorcycles and it was then when they got to know the alleged attackers.
“They (the attackers) are among the first people among the Chinese community here who welcomed us. They expressed interest in working with us but we were warned by others who know them well that they were con men and they were soon going to take advantage of us and rob us,” she said.
After receiving the warning Ms Chen said they cut contacts with them and that’s when the assailants planned the attack.
She said the group informed her husband that if they were not willing to partner with them in their business undertakings, then they should leave Tanzania and go back to China.
